Promote cooperation to effectively conserve white-cheeked gibbon (Nomascus leucogenys) and endangered species in the Xuan Lien – Pu Hoat Conservations

The two nature reserves of Pu Hoat, Nghe An and Xuan Lien, Thanh Hoa are located in the Indochinese green corridor with many rare mammal species, including the white-cheeked gibbon (scientific name is Nomascus leucogenys) Primates are classified as Critically Endangered (CR) because of their very high risk of extinction (according to the IUCN Red List 2020

New species in Pu Hoat and Xuan Lien reserves

Through monitoring surveys by the Center for Nature Conservation and Development (CCD) on white-cheeked gibbons at Xuan Lien and Pu Hoat Nature Reserve in the period of 2019-2020, there are 42 herds in Xuan Lien. with 111 individuals (compared to 19 herds of 56 individuals from 2011 to 2012). At Pu Hoat 67 herds with 161 individuals. This result confirms once again the conservation value as well as the importance of the Xuan Lien – Pu Hoat landscape for the white cheeked gibbon. This is perhaps the most important conservation and distribution area for this critically endangered gibbon. The main threat to the white-cheeked gibbon remains hunting. In addition, the development of some new hydropower plants (e.g. Nam Xam hydropower plant) is also a long-term threat as the dams will cause deforestation, increase infiltration and fragmentation of the gibbon’s habitat.

In order to preserve this extremely endangered and rare wildlife, it is necessary to have close cooperation in the patrol and protection work of the reserve rangers. Develop and implement a mechanism for regular coordination and information sharing between the two protected areas in order to have appropriate management and patrol measures to minimize adverse impacts. Strengthening the crackdown on illegal hunting and trapping activities, promoting community communication on forest and wildlife protection.

The nature conservation of the two conservation areas Pu Hoat and Xuan Lien should be identified as common green corridor of mammals (regardless of the territory and boundaries of Nghe An and Thanh Hoa provinces). The process of patrolling and monitoring forest rangers should determine the common responsibility of supporting each other to protect the common wildlife species of both nature reserves and the same green belt, not only of the two provinces but also the Indochinese region.
